Grays Backstamps

These are four of the backstamps used on Susie Cooper Pattern items from Grays. They were used between 1923 and 1934 although Susie left Grays as Head of Design in 1929:

This Liner backstamp as shown was used between 1927 and 1929. It was specially used for Susie Cooper's own designs and is a very early example of a "designer label". After Susie had left Grays in 1929 the backstamp continued to be used with the words "Designed By Susie Cooper" removed. Variations on this backstamp included: "Susie Cooper Ware" and "Susie Cooper Nursery Ware" (all in blue).

This backstamp was used exclusively on Grays "Gloria Lustre" ware between 1923 and 1928. Many of these lustre items were designed by Susie Cooper but some almost certainly were by other designers and it is impossible to say which were her designs although if Susie Cooper's monogram "SVC" are included with the backstamp this would strongly indicate one of her own designs.

The Galleon backstamp is the commonest backstamp found on Grays items during the period 1921 to 1931. The backstamp is often found on items designed by Susie Cooper but is less desirable to collectors than the liner backstamp with the words "Designed by Susie Cooper" which of course confirms the pattern was hers.

The Clipper backstamp replaced the Galleon for most of Grays wares from 1931. Initially "Made in Stoke on Trent, England" was replaced by "Hanley, England" until Grays moved to their Stoke on Trent factory in 1933. This backstamp can be found on some items with older Susie Cooper known patterns.
